Tile Adhesives
What is the best tile adhesive for bathroom walls in Kenya?
+
The best tile adhesive for bathroom walls in Kenya is a C1-rated polymer-modified cementitious adhesive with water resistance. Probond Ceramic & Porcelain by MZITO Africa is manufactured for exactly this application — it provides the flexibility and adhesion strength needed in humid, wet conditions common across Kenyan bathrooms, from Mombasa apartments to Nairobi townhouses.
Can I use cement instead of tile adhesive in Kenya?
+
You can, but the risk of tile failure increases significantly — especially with large-format porcelain tiles, in wet areas, and on walls. Cement sand mortar has lower bond strength and no flexibility. Tiles bonded with cement are more likely to pop or crack as buildings move with seasonal temperature changes.
How long does tile adhesive take to dry in Kenya?
+
Standard cementitious tile adhesive achieves initial set in 24 hours under normal Nairobi temperatures. Full cure takes 7–14 days. Grouting should begin no earlier than 24 hours after tiling. In cooler highland conditions during Nairobi's cold season (June–August), allow 48 hours before grouting.
How much tile adhesive do I need per square metre?
+
One 25kg bag of Probond Ceramic & Porcelain covers approximately 4–5.5 m² on a reasonably flat substrate with a 6mm notched trowel, or 3–4 m² for large-format floor tiles with a 10mm trowel. Always account for wastage and substrate irregularities.
What causes tile adhesive to fail in Kenya?
+
The most common causes of tile adhesive failure in Kenya are: excessive water in the mix, applying adhesive to a dusty or unsound substrate, tiling before the screed or slab has fully cured, skipping waterproofing in wet areas, and using the wrong adhesive classification for large-format or outdoor tiles.
Is Probond suitable for outdoor use in East Africa?
+
Probond Granite Marble & Stone is the recommended choice for outdoor applications including terraces, steps, and paving. It is a polymer-modified adhesive that provides the flexibility and durability needed to handle East Africa's dry-wet seasonal cycle without bond failure.
